What first-timers get wrong in Dubai
There is no cash accepted on the Metro or buses at all, so buy a nol Silver card for AED 25, which includes AED 19 of travel credit, or a AED 2 red ticket for a handful of journeys. Fares are AED 3, 5 or 7.50 by zone and daily spending caps near AED 14. The Gold cabin costs double. Friday is a half-day and the weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
What things cost in Dubai

Dubai with kids, realistically
Almost the entire family offering is deliberately indoors, because June to September rules out outdoor plans completely. KidZania and the aquarium sit inside Dubai Mall, IMG Worlds is a fully enclosed theme park, and The Green Planet is a biodome in City Walk. The Metro is spotless, driverless and fully stroller-accessible, with a designated women and children cabin at one end of every train.
What to eat in Dubai
The real cuisine here is diaspora. Ravi in Satwa has fed Pakistani food to labourers and chefs alike for decades. Karama and Deira handle South Indian canteens and Iranian bakery bread. Emirati cooking takes finding, though Al Fanar and the Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi do machboos, harees and luqaimat properly. Shawarma from Al Mallah is the late-night default. Friday brunch is an institution.
Dubai after dark
Structurally, almost everything licensed sits inside a hotel, because standalone restaurants rarely hold liquor permits. That means rooftops in Business Bay, beach clubs on Palm Jumeirah and JBR, and DIFC for after-work cocktails. Venues wind down around three. Ladies' nights on Tuesdays run city-wide. During Ramadan music venues fall quiet and daytime service is restricted, and drinking in public is an offence year-round.
