At the Top on levels 124 and 125 is the sensible Burj Khalifa ticket, since level 148 costs far more for a marginally higher window, and non-sunset weekday slots are the cheapest. The fountain below performs free every half hour after dark. The abra across Dubai Creek to the Deira souks costs one dirham and beats every paid boat. The Dubai Frame is literally a photo stop.
Dubai's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of the Future, a steel torus wrapped in Arabic calligraphy on Sheikh Zayed Road, sells out days ahead and is experiential rather than object-based. Etihad Museum explains the 1971 union around the preserved Union House. Al Shindagha along the creek covers pearl diving and perfume across restored courtyard houses. Jameel Arts Centre and the Alserkal Avenue warehouses in Al Quoz show contemporary work free.
What first-timers get wrong in Dubai
There is no cash accepted on the Metro or buses at all, so buy a nol Silver card for AED 25, which includes AED 19 of travel credit, or a AED 2 red ticket for a handful of journeys. Fares are AED 3, 5 or 7.50 by zone and daily spending caps near AED 14. The Gold cabin costs double. Friday is a half-day and the weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
When the weather turns in Dubai
Rain is rare and, when it does arrive, overwhelming, because the drainage was never designed for it and the road network stops functioning. The far more common problem is forty-five degrees in August.
