The Elbphilharmonie Plaza, an open deck at 37 metres wedged between brick warehouse and glass wave, is free, and the long curved escalator up to it is half the experience. Speicherstadt's warehouse canals, UNESCO-listed since 2015 and still standing on oak piles, look best lit after dark. Miniatur Wunderland genuinely earns its ticket, but timed slots sell out weeks in advance.
What to eat in Hamburg
Franzbrotchen, flattened and caramelised and heavy with cinnamon, exist here and effectively nowhere else, so buy one from a bakery rather than a cafe. A Fischbrotchen at Brucke 10 on the Landungsbrucken is the honest harbour lunch. Labskaus, corned beef mashed with beetroot under a fried egg and a rollmop, looks alarming and is a real sailors' dish. Ditmar-Koel-Strasse grills the Portuguese fish.
