What first-timers get wrong in Hamburg
HVV tickets already cover the harbour ferries, so buying a separate boat ticket is money thrown away, and the weekday 9-Uhr day pass undercuts the all-day version if you start after nine. Elbphilharmonie Plaza needs a free timed ticket from the machines at the entrance, or three euros booked ahead to skip the queue. Photographing the Reeperbahn windows will get you confronted.
What's actually worth your time in Hamburg
The Elbphilharmonie Plaza, an open deck at 37 metres wedged between brick warehouse and glass wave, is free, and the long curved escalator up to it is half the experience. Speicherstadt's warehouse canals, UNESCO-listed since 2015 and still standing on oak piles, look best lit after dark. Miniatur Wunderland genuinely earns its ticket, but timed slots sell out weeks in advance.

The Internationales Maritimes Museum fills nine floors of a Speicherstadt warehouse. Hamburg with kids, realistically
Ferry 62 from Landungsbrucken to Finkenwerder is a genuine harbour cruise on an ordinary HVV ticket, which makes every paid boat tour look absurd. Hagenbeck, opened in 1907 and the first zoo to replace bars with moats, still holds up. Planten un Blomen stages free water-light concerts on summer evenings, and the Elbstrand sand at Ovelgonne is a beach with container ships sliding past.
