St. Pauli's Reeperbahn runs all night, and Kiez tradition is to finish rather than begin at the Fischmarkt when the halls open around five on Sunday morning. Uebel und Gefahrlich occupies a wartime flak bunker at Feldstrasse; Molotow and the Golden Pudel are the small rooms that matter. Herbertstrasse stays closed to women and minors. What to eat in Hamburg
Franzbrotchen, flattened and caramelised and heavy with cinnamon, exist here and effectively nowhere else, so buy one from a bakery rather than a cafe. A Fischbrotchen at Brucke 10 on the Landungsbrucken is the honest harbour lunch. Labskaus, corned beef mashed with beetroot under a fried egg and a rollmop, looks alarming and is a real sailors' dish. Ditmar-Koel-Strasse grills the Portuguese fish.
What's actually worth your time in Hamburg
The Elbphilharmonie Plaza, an open deck at 37 metres wedged between brick warehouse and glass wave, is free, and the long curved escalator up to it is half the experience. Speicherstadt's warehouse canals, UNESCO-listed since 2015 and still standing on oak piles, look best lit after dark. Miniatur Wunderland genuinely earns its ticket, but timed slots sell out weeks in advance.
Hamburg with kids, realistically
Ferry 62 from Landungsbrucken to Finkenwerder is a genuine harbour cruise on an ordinary HVV ticket, which makes every paid boat tour look absurd. Hagenbeck, opened in 1907 and the first zoo to replace bars with moats, still holds up. Planten un Blomen stages free water-light concerts on summer evenings, and the Elbstrand sand at Ovelgonne is a beach with container ships sliding past.
When the weather turns in Hamburg
Hamburgers call it Schietwetter and simply continue. The Alsterarkaden, a run of white arches beside the Kleine Alster, plus the Europa Passage, let you move between the Rathaus and Jungfernstieg without unfolding anything. Miniatur Wunderland eats four hours. For architecture, the Kontorhausviertel's Chilehaus and its ship's-prow corner read better in rain, when the dark brick turns almost black.
