Jeju with kids, realistically

A rental car is close to compulsory; the island has no railway and buses to trailheads run infrequently. Small children do well on the shallow west-coast beaches at Hyeopjae and Gwakji, and at the Jeju Folk Village in Seongeup. The Seongsan Ilchulbong staircase is manageable from about age six. Wind is the real variable here and it can be strong enough to end a beach day.

When the weather turns in Jeju

Jeju is among the wettest places in Korea and the rain arrives sideways. Manjanggul is entirely underground and stays cool whatever is happening above, though the floor is wet and uneven throughout. The 4.3 Peace Park, the Nexon Computer Museum and the Osulloc tea museum near Seogwang are all indoors. Hallasan's trails close outright in bad weather, so hold a second plan.

What things cost in Jeju

What to eat in Jeju

Black pig, heuk-dwaeji, is grilled along Jeju City's Black Pork Street and eaten with melchi jeot, a fermented anchovy dip you will not meet elsewhere in Korea. Galchi, the silver hairtail, comes braised or grilled whole in Seogwipo. Gogi guksu is pork broth over wheat noodles. Order abalone dolsotbap on the eastern coast, where the haenyeo actually land it.

Jeju after dark

Jeju does not really have one. Jeju City's Tapdong waterfront and the Nuwemaru strip near the old airport road hold most of the bars, and Seogwipo is quieter still. The island is car-dependent and drink-driving enforcement is aggressive, which shapes the entire evening. Most restaurants stop seating around nine. What people actually do is drink at the pension with a sea view.

When to go to Jeju

The month to avoid is January — around 8°C (46°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
