What's actually worth your time in Jeju

Seongsan Ilchulbong is a 182-metre tuff cone thrown up by shallow-water eruptions roughly 6,700 years ago, and the staircase takes about half an hour; gates open an hour before sunrise. Manjanggul opens one kilometre of an 8.9-kilometre lava tube, ending at a 7.6-metre lava column, the tallest known anywhere. Hallasan's two summit trails, Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa, charge nothing but require an advance reservation.

What first-timers get wrong in Jeju

Jeju operates its own visa-free entry separate from mainland Korea, so an onward flight to Seoul is a domestic leg you may not be admitted for. Book the rental car and the Hallasan permit before flying. Wind and fog cancel Gimpo-route flights regularly, so never schedule a tight international connection. Buses take Cashbee and T-money; taxis outside the two cities are scarce.

Jeju's museums, and which one to pick

The Jeju 4.3 Peace Park documents the 1948 uprising and the killings that followed, suppressed as a subject for fifty years; entry is free and it is heavy going. The Haenyeo Museum at Hado explains the women divers whose culture UNESCO listed in 2016. Bonte and the Yumin Museum are both Tadao Ando buildings. Skip the teddy bear and trick-art museums, of which the island has many.

When the weather turns in Jeju

Jeju is among the wettest places in Korea and the rain arrives sideways. Manjanggul is entirely underground and stays cool whatever is happening above, though the floor is wet and uneven throughout. The 4.3 Peace Park, the Nexon Computer Museum and the Osulloc tea museum near Seogwang are all indoors. Hallasan's trails close outright in bad weather, so hold a second plan.

What things cost in Jeju

Seongsan Ilchulbong is 5,000 won and Manjanggul 4,000. A black pork grill for two runs 40,000 to 60,000 won before drinks. Intra-city buses fall around 1,150 to 1,500 won, and a compact rental car starts near 40,000 to 60,000 won a day off-season before insurance. Hallasan and the 27 Olle trail routes cost nothing to walk.

When to go to Jeju

The month to avoid is January — around 8°C (46°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
