Jeju operates its own visa-free entry separate from mainland Korea, so an onward flight to Seoul is a domestic leg you may not be admitted for. Book the rental car and the Hallasan permit before flying. Wind and fog cancel Gimpo-route flights regularly, so never schedule a tight international connection. Buses take Cashbee and T-money; taxis outside the two cities are scarce.
What's actually worth your time in Jeju
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a 182-metre tuff cone thrown up by shallow-water eruptions roughly 6,700 years ago, and the staircase takes about half an hour; gates open an hour before sunrise. Manjanggul opens one kilometre of an 8.9-kilometre lava tube, ending at a 7.6-metre lava column, the tallest known anywhere. Hallasan's two summit trails, Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa, charge nothing but require an advance reservation.
What to eat in Jeju
Black pig, heuk-dwaeji, is grilled along Jeju City's Black Pork Street and eaten with melchi jeot, a fermented anchovy dip you will not meet elsewhere in Korea. Galchi, the silver hairtail, comes braised or grilled whole in Seogwipo. Gogi guksu is pork broth over wheat noodles. Order abalone dolsotbap on the eastern coast, where the haenyeo actually land it.
When the weather turns in Jeju
Jeju is among the wettest places in Korea and the rain arrives sideways. Manjanggul is entirely underground and stays cool whatever is happening above, though the floor is wet and uneven throughout. The 4.3 Peace Park, the Nexon Computer Museum and the Osulloc tea museum near Seogwang are all indoors. Hallasan's trails close outright in bad weather, so hold a second plan.
