Emerald Bay parking costs ten dollars, caps vehicles at eighteen feet, and fills before nine in July, while roadside parking on Highway 89 is towed aggressively. Sand Harbor shuts its gate when full. Carry chains from November through April even in a rental, and never leave food in a car.
What's actually worth your time in Lake Tahoe
Emerald Bay is the view everyone drives Highway 89 for, and Vikingsholm below it is free to tour from late May into September, first come and no booking. The catch is the trail: one mile down, five hundred feet of descent, four hundred feet to climb back. Sand Harbor on the Nevada shore has the boulder-strewn shallows worth the drive. Fannette Island is Tahoe's only island.
