What's actually worth your time in Lake Tahoe
Emerald Bay is the view everyone drives Highway 89 for, and Vikingsholm below it is free to tour from late May into September, first come and no booking. The catch is the trail: one mile down, five hundred feet of descent, four hundred feet to climb back. Sand Harbor on the Nevada shore has the boulder-strewn shallows worth the drive. Fannette Island is Tahoe's only island.
Lake Tahoe's museums, and which one to pick
Tahoe is thin on galleries and rich in preserved houses. Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee has the strongest exhibit, where the Pioneer Monument stands on a pedestal twenty-two feet high to mark the snow depth the Donner Party faced. Thunderbird Lodge, George Whittell's 1936 stone estate above the east shore, opens only by advance reservation. Tallac Historic Site's summer estates are free to wander.
Lake Tahoe after dark
The state line runs down the middle of the evening. On the Nevada side at Stateline, Harveys and Harrah's keep gaming floors and bars going all night with no closing time; walk a hundred yards west into California and the bars stop at two with no gaming at all. Ski season fills the casino showrooms. Truckee and the west shore go quiet early year-round.
What to eat in Lake Tahoe
Tahoe eats on decks over water, not in dining rooms. Gar Woods on the west shore built its reputation on the Wet Woody, a rum drink, and the pier it is served on. The Fire Sign Cafe in Tahoe City handles breakfast queues. Truckee's Commercial Row, a railroad street rather than a lakefront one, holds the better restaurants, and the Stateline casinos run cheap late buffets.
Lake Tahoe with kids, realistically
The paved East Shore Trail runs three flat miles from Incline Village to Sand Harbor and takes a stroller, which almost nothing else here does. Rafting the Truckee from Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City is gentle and shallow. Sand Harbor's shore is warm and calm. Skip Vikingsholm with toddlers unless you are willing to carry one four hundred vertical feet back up.
