What's actually worth your time in Cancún
Playa Delfines at kilometro 18 is the free public beach with the CANCUN letters and no hotel wall between you and the water. El Rey's small ruin at kilometro 17 has iguanas and about forty minutes of interest, no more than that. Isla Mujeres is the day trip that repays the effort, with Ultramar sailing from Puerto Juarez. Chichen Itza is nearly three hours each way, so go by organised tour.
What to eat in Cancún
Downtown, not the Hotel Zone, is where Yucatecan cooking lives. Mercado 28 and the quieter Mercado 23 serve cochinita pibil tortas and panuchos at local prices. When the weather turns in Cancún
Rain arrives in short violent bursts between June and November, and hotel pools empty within seconds. La Isla and Plaza La Fiesta in the Hotel Zone are open-air malls that stay wet, whereas Plaza Las Americas downtown is fully enclosed and has a cinema. Museo Maya covers an hour. Cenote swimming near Puerto Morelos is entirely unaffected, since you are already underwater.
