What's actually worth your time in Cancún
Playa Delfines at kilometro 18 is the free public beach with the CANCUN letters and no hotel wall between you and the water. El Rey's small ruin at kilometro 17 has iguanas and about forty minutes of interest, no more than that. Isla Mujeres is the day trip that repays the effort, with Ultramar sailing from Puerto Juarez. Chichen Itza is nearly three hours each way, so go by organised tour.
Cancún after dark
Everything loud is compressed into Punta Cancun around kilometro 9.5, where Coco Bongo, Mandala and Senor Frog's sit within sight of each other. Coco Bongo opens near 9:30pm, starts its acrobatic tribute revue about 10:30 and runs to 3:30am, with midweek entry including drinks from around US$69 and weekends considerably higher. Downtown drinks at Parque de las Palapas instead, cheaper and Mexican, winding down by one.
What things cost in Cancún
The R1 and R2 buses along Kukulcan cost about 12 pesos a ride, paid in cash to the driver, and they run through the night. ADO's airport coach downtown is roughly 130 pesos against several hundred for a taxi. Ultramar to Isla Mujeres is near 300 pesos return. A cochinita torta at Mercado 28 stays well under 100 pesos; the same lunch in the Hotel Zone triples.
Cancún's museums, and which one to pick
Cancun is thin on museums and honest about it. Museo Maya de Cancun on Boulevard Kukulcan holds Yucatan Peninsula finds and includes the San Miguelito ruins on the same grounds and ticket; it closes Mondays. MUSA, the underwater sculpture museum by Jason deCaires Taylor, is reachable only by snorkel or dive boat from Cancun or Isla Mujeres, so visibility decides whether the day works at all.
What to eat in Cancún
Downtown, not the Hotel Zone, is where Yucatecan cooking lives. Mercado 28 and the quieter Mercado 23 serve cochinita pibil tortas and panuchos at local prices. Parque de las Palapas fills after dark with esquites and marquesitas, the crisp rolled crepes filled with Edam cheese and cajeta. Along the lagoon, El Fish Fritanga grills whole fish. Hotel Zone restaurants price in dollars and taste like it.
