Krabi after dark
Evenings here are beach bars, not clubs. Ao Nang's Center Point and the Soi RCA strip carry the fire shows and buckets, generally winding down between one and two. Railay is quieter still, a few reggae bars along the East side mudflat. Krabi Town, where local life actually happens, is close to silent by eleven. The real parties are over on Ko Phi Phi.
What to eat in Krabi
Krabi Town's Walking Street, Friday to Sunday evenings around Maharaj Soi 8, is where southern Thai food is cheapest and best: gaeng tai pla, khao yam rice salad, roti from the Muslim stalls. Ao Nang's beachfront is priced for tourists rather than cooks. Southern curries run hotter than Bangkok's, and seafood at the night market is bought by weight before it is cooked.
What's actually worth your time in Krabi
Only a longtail reaches Railay, 100 baht from Ao Nang and fifteen minutes across, and its limestone walls, Phra Nang cave beach and climbing routes are the reason to come to Krabi at all. Tiger Cave Temple is free and roughly 1,260 steps straight up, so go before eight. The Four Islands and Hong Island boat days are the standard alternatives.
Krabi with kids, realistically
Ao Nang works better with children than Railay, which needs a boat for every errand and has a tidal mudflat on its eastern side. Longtails carry no ladders and little shade, so check life jacket sizes before boarding. Emerald Pool's warm water and the hot springs waterfall suit all ages. Sea kayaking through the Ao Thalane mangroves is calm and good from about six.
When the weather turns in Krabi
The southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October, and boats are the first casualty, since the coastguard suspends longtail crossings in swell and can strand you on Railay. Inland holds up better: Emerald Pool, the Khlong Thom hot springs, and the Tiger Cave stairs while it is cooler. Vogue Mall in Krabi Town and the cooking schools absorb a wet afternoon.
