What first-timers get wrong in Geneva
Do not buy a transit ticket before checking whether your accommodation has issued the free Geneva Transport Card, because most visitors pay for travel they already have. A machine in the airport baggage hall dispenses a free eighty-minute ticket into town. Prices stay Swiss even though France is fifteen minutes away, which is exactly why residents cross the border to do their shopping.
What's actually worth your time in Geneva
The Jet d'Eau throws water 140 metres and costs nothing, though it is switched off in high wind and hard frost. Cathedrale Saint-Pierre charges separately for the towers and the archaeological site beneath, and both are worth it. CERN's Science Gateway is free, out at the end of tram 18. The Broken Chair outside the UN is a five-minute stop carrying a heavy point.

When the weather turns in Geneva
Free permanent collections at the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire and the Natural History Museum absorb a wet morning at no cost. Bains des Paquis runs a hammam and sauna through the winter for a few francs. The Red Cross Museum is entirely indoors and needs two hours. Failing all of that, the Confederation Centre and Rive arcades connect several blocks under cover.
