Do not buy a transit ticket before checking whether your accommodation has issued the free Geneva Transport Card, because most visitors pay for travel they already have. A machine in the airport baggage hall dispenses a free eighty-minute ticket into town. Prices stay Swiss even though France is fifteen minutes away, which is exactly why residents cross the border to do their shopping.
Geneva's museums, and which one to pick
The Musee d'Art et d'Histoire keeps its permanent collection free and closes Mondays. The Patek Philippe Museum is a watchmaking archive rather than a shop and opens afternoons Tuesday to Saturday only, which catches people out. The ICRC's Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum builds its rooms around humanitarian dilemmas and is the most affecting thing here. The Natural History Museum is also free.
