What first-timers get wrong in Pokhara
Any walk into the Annapurna Conservation Area needs an ACAP permit, 3,000 rupees for foreigners and 1,000 for SAARC nationals, bought in Pokhara or Kathmandu before you set off, and foreign trekkers are now required to walk with a licensed guide. Pokhara's international airport still runs almost no scheduled international flights, so you arrive via Kathmandu, either a short hop or a seven-hour bus down the Prithvi Highway.
What's actually worth your time in Pokhara
Phewa Lake's rowing boats cost 500 to 800 rupees an hour, or about a thousand with someone rowing, and nearly all of them stop at Tal Barahi, the pagoda temple on the island. Sarangkot at dawn means leaving Lakeside around five to watch Machhapuchhre turn gold; the taxi runs 1,500 to 2,000 rupees return. The World Peace Pagoda is free but wants a boat crossing and a half-hour climb. Devi's Fall is brief.
What things cost in Pokhara
A Thakali set runs 350 to 600 rupees and a plate of momos about 200, so eating well costs very little. An hour's boat on Phewa is 500 to 800, the Sarangkot sunrise taxi 1,500 to 2,000 return, and the International Mountain Museum 750 for foreigners against 150 for Nepalis. Tandem paragliding is quoted in dollars, around 80 to 90 for a standard flight. Lakeside beds undercut Kathmandu's Thamel clearly.
Pokhara with kids, realistically
An hour in a rowing boat is the easy win, and children can usually take the oars at the shallow eastern end. Mahendra Cave and the neighbouring Bat Cave in Batulechaur mean wet, low, unlit squeezes, fine for confident eight-year-olds and miserable for toddlers. Lakeside has no continuous pavement and motorbikes fill every gap, so hold hands. Tandem paragliding operators generally want children of about five and upward.
When the weather turns in Pokhara
Few places in Nepal collect more rain than this valley, and the Annapurnas simply disappear behind cloud for much of June to September, so do not build a trip around the view then. The International Mountain Museum and the Gurkha Memorial Museum fill the dry hours. Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, running underground opposite Devi's Fall, is more impressive in rain, when the waterfall thunders through its far end.

The month to avoid is June — around 28°C (82°F) with roughly 22 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: November is the sweet spot, June the month most people skip.
