Pokhara after dark
Everything happens on one road. Lakeside has a dozen bars running live cover bands through Nepali folk-rock and Hendrix to rooms full of trekkers. Amplified music is meant to stop around ten and most places comply, with Busy Bee Cafe the usual holdout running towards two. There is no club scene and no late food. Half the street sleeps early because it is walking uphill at six the next morning.
What to eat in Pokhara
Order the Thakali set rather than plain dal bhat. It comes from the Thak Khola valley up towards Mustang and arrives as dal, rice, a meat curry, fermented gundruk greens and pickles sharpened with numbing timur pepper, for 350 to 600 rupees at Lakeside. Momos run about 200 a plate. Fish pulled from Phewa itself turns up as sadeko machha. Lakeside menus otherwise drift international; the Old Bazaar cooks Nepali.
What first-timers get wrong in Pokhara
Any walk into the Annapurna Conservation Area needs an ACAP permit, 3,000 rupees for foreigners and 1,000 for SAARC nationals, bought in Pokhara or Kathmandu before you set off, and foreign trekkers are now required to walk with a licensed guide. Pokhara's international airport still runs almost no scheduled international flights, so you arrive via Kathmandu, either a short hop or a seven-hour bus down the Prithvi Highway.
When the weather turns in Pokhara
Few places in Nepal collect more rain than this valley, and the Annapurnas simply disappear behind cloud for much of June to September, so do not build a trip around the view then. The International Mountain Museum and the Gurkha Memorial Museum fill the dry hours. Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, running underground opposite Devi's Fall, is more impressive in rain, when the waterfall thunders through its far end.
What things cost in Pokhara
A Thakali set runs 350 to 600 rupees and a plate of momos about 200, so eating well costs very little. An hour's boat on Phewa is 500 to 800, the Sarangkot sunrise taxi 1,500 to 2,000 return, and the International Mountain Museum 750 for foreigners against 150 for Nepalis. Tandem paragliding is quoted in dollars, around 80 to 90 for a standard flight. Lakeside beds undercut Kathmandu's Thamel clearly.
