What first-timers get wrong in San Miguel de Allende
There is no airport. Querétaro lies eighty-seven kilometres and about seventy minutes away, León-Guanajuato roughly ninety minutes, and a private transfer costs several times the Primera Plus bus from either. The centre is a UNESCO-protected grid with almost nowhere to park. Prices are set for a market of American and Canadian retirees, which makes San Miguel the expensive stop on any Mexican route.
What's actually worth your time in San Miguel de Allende
The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel's pink neo-gothic spires were raised in the 1880s by a self-taught local mason, Zeferino Gutiérrez, reportedly working from postcards of European cathedrals. The Jardín in front of it functions as the town's living room. Fábrica La Aurora, a 1902 textile mill north of the centre, now fills its unrestored machine halls with galleries and studios, free to wander. El Charco del Ingenio preserves cactus above town.
What things cost in San Miguel de Allende
El Charco del Ingenio is around a hundred pesos, while Bellas Artes and Fábrica La Aurora cost nothing and the Casa de Allende museum a small peso fee. A comida corrida in Mercado Ignacio Ramírez runs 80 to 120 pesos where a Jardín rooftop main can be five times that. La Gruta charges a few hundred pesos. A Querétaro airport transfer starts around 1,200 pesos.

Cobblestones the size of fists make a pushchair almost unusable, so carriers only, and the gradients make that matter. The compensations are the Jardín's balloon sellers, El Charco del Ingenio's canyon trails at around a hundred pesos, and the hot springs north of town, where La Gruta's grotto pool suits confident swimmers and drains for cleaning on Mondays and Tuesdays. Rain is a June-to-September afternoon habit, brief and heavy and usually arriving around four. Duck into Fábrica La Aurora, where galleries and cafés fill a whole mill under one roof, or the cloister at Bellas Artes. Mercado Ignacio Ramírez and the artisan market are covered. Nights turn cold at this altitude even in summer, which catches out anyone who packed purely for Mexico.
