What's actually worth your time in San Miguel de Allende

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel's pink neo-gothic spires were raised in the 1880s by a self-taught local mason, Zeferino Gutiérrez, reportedly working from postcards of European cathedrals. The Jardín in front of it functions as the town's living room. Fábrica La Aurora, a 1902 textile mill north of the centre, now fills its unrestored machine halls with galleries and studios, free to wander. El Charco del Ingenio preserves cactus above town.

Evenings orbit the Jardín, where mariachi groups wait to be hired and the Parroquia stays floodlit late. La Azotea and the other rooftops fill for sunset then thin out, with live salsa several nights a week just off the square. Nights turn cold at this altitude even in summer, which catches out anyone who packed purely for Mexico.
