There is no airport. Querétaro lies eighty-seven kilometres and about seventy minutes away, León-Guanajuato roughly ninety minutes, and a private transfer costs several times the Primera Plus bus from either. The centre is a UNESCO-protected grid with almost nowhere to park. Prices are set for a market of American and Canadian retirees, which makes San Miguel the expensive stop on any Mexican route.

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel's pink neo-gothic spires were raised in the 1880s by a self-taught local mason, Zeferino Gutiérrez, reportedly working from postcards of European cathedrals.
