What things cost in Corfu
Dinner at a village taverna comes to 15 to 20 euro a head, while a Liston coffee at 5 to 6 is buying the view. The three-day combined museum ticket is 14, the Achilleion 7 and the Museum of Asian Art 6. Blue town buses are around 1,50 and green buses to Paleokastritsa a few euro. Kumquat liqueur starts near 8 a bottle in town.
What first-timers get wrong in Corfu
Saint Spyridon's silver reliquary is carried through the streets four times a year, including Palm Sunday and 11 August, and the town stops for it. On Holy Saturday morning Corfiots hurl clay pots from balconies onto the Liston, so stand well back. Airport buses are limited and taxis run unmetered on fixed island rates, so agree the fare first. Igoumenitsa ferries take about ninety minutes.
What to eat in Corfu
Corfu cooks Venetian. Sofrito is veal in white wine, garlic and vinegar; pastitsada is rooster stewed with spice over thick hollow pasta and eaten on Sundays; bourdeto is scorpionfish reddened with hot paprika. Kumquat liqueur is a British import turned local industry, and tsitsibira is Corfiot ginger beer made nowhere else in Greece. Order all of it off the Liston, where the prices halve.
Corfu's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of Asian Art, inside the neoclassical Palace of St Michael and St George, holds roughly ten thousand Chinese, Japanese and Indian objects gathered by a Corfiot diplomat, and nothing else in Greece resembles it; admission halves from November to March. A 14-euro combined ticket covers the Old Fortress, the Antivouniotissa Byzantine museum, Mon Repos and the Archaeological Museum across three days.
Corfu after dark
The Liston's cafes trade late and expensively and act as the town's living room. Actual clubbing sits at Kavos in the far south, which operates June to September for a young British crowd and is a shut village otherwise. Corfu Town keeps small bars through the Campiello lanes and the old Jewish quarter, while Sidari and Ipsos occupy the middle ground.
