What's actually worth your time in Corfu
The Spianada is the largest square in Greece and has a cricket pitch on it, a leftover of the 1815 to 1864 British protectorate, and matches are still played. The Liston arcade alongside was built by the French to echo the Rue de Rivoli. The Old Fortress costs around 6 euro. At Kanoni, Mouse Island sits directly beneath the airport approach path.
When the weather turns in Corfu
Corfu is the wettest of the large Greek islands and winter storms are serious. The Asian art museum and the Archaeological Museum, home to the Gorgon pediment from the Temple of Artemis, are both indoors in town. The Old Fortress has covered casemates. Casa Parlante, a costumed nineteenth-century house museum on Nikiforou Theotoki, works with children, and the Liston arcade keeps you dry between cafes.
What first-timers get wrong in Corfu
Saint Spyridon's silver reliquary is carried through the streets four times a year, including Palm Sunday and 11 August, and the town stops for it. On Holy Saturday morning Corfiots hurl clay pots from balconies onto the Liston, so stand well back. Airport buses are limited and taxis run unmetered on fixed island rates, so agree the fare first. Igoumenitsa ferries take about ninety minutes.
Corfu's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of Asian Art, inside the neoclassical Palace of St Michael and St George, holds roughly ten thousand Chinese, Japanese and Indian objects gathered by a Corfiot diplomat, and nothing else in Greece resembles it; admission halves from November to March. A 14-euro combined ticket covers the Old Fortress, the Antivouniotissa Byzantine museum, Mon Repos and the Archaeological Museum across three days.
