What things cost in Goa
A scooter rents for roughly 400 to 600 rupees a day in season and less in monsoon, plus fuel from pumps that often take cash only. A beach-shack fish thali runs 250 to 450 rupees and a Kingfisher 120 to 180. Goa levies the lowest alcohol duty in India, so a bottle of feni costs a few hundred rupees. Entry to the Basilica of Bom Jesus is free.
What first-timers get wrong in Goa
Goan taxis carry no meters and app cabs are limited, so use the state-backed Goa Miles app or rent a scooter, and expect friction if you decline a taxi stand's quote. Rentals legally need an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, and checkpoints on the Calangute road do ask. Anjuna's flea market runs Wednesdays, October to April only. Drinking on the beach is legal; glass bottles on the beach are not.
What to eat in Goa
Catholic and Hindu kitchens diverge sharply: pork vindaloo, sorpotel and chourico on one side, xacuti, kismur and solkadhi on the other. Fish curry rice soured with kokum is the everyday meal, better at a Panjim lunch place than a beach shack. Bebinca, a layered coconut pudding, closes the meal. Feni, distilled from cashew apple or coconut toddy, is the state spirit and cannot legally be sold outside Goa.
Goa's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of Goa in Pilerne, founded by the artist Subodh Kerkar, is the most interesting contemporary space here and closes Mondays. The Goa State Museum in Panjim is patchy but keeps a rare rotating Vishnu bronze and Portuguese-era furniture. Houses of Goa in Torda, a wedge-shaped building by Gerard da Cunha, explains Indo-Portuguese domestic architecture. The Museum of Christian Art in Old Goa is small and excellent.
Goa after dark
The season decides everything. From November to February, Anjuna and Vagator run beach and hill venues, though a state noise rule silencing outdoor amplified music at 22:00 pushed the scene into enclosed clubs and Saturday night markets. Tito's Lane in Baga is the mainstream strip. The offshore casinos moored on the Mandovi at Panjim run all night, because gambling is legal on water but not on land.
