What first-timers get wrong in Goa
Goan taxis carry no meters and app cabs are limited, so use the state-backed Goa Miles app or rent a scooter, and expect friction if you decline a taxi stand's quote. Rentals legally need an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, and checkpoints on the Calangute road do ask. Anjuna's flea market runs Wednesdays, October to April only. Drinking on the beach is legal; glass bottles on the beach are not.
What's actually worth your time in Goa
Goa splits hard. North Goa around Anjuna, Vagator and Baga is markets, shacks and traffic; the south around Palolem, Agonda and Patnem is quieter with cleaner sand. Old Goa's Basilica of Bom Jesus, holding the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the Se Cathedral form the UNESCO core and deserve an hour. Fontainhas in Panjim, the Latin Quarter of ochre and indigo houses, is the best walk in the state.
Goa's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of Goa in Pilerne, founded by the artist Subodh Kerkar, is the most interesting contemporary space here and closes Mondays. The Goa State Museum in Panjim is patchy but keeps a rare rotating Vishnu bronze and Portuguese-era furniture. Houses of Goa in Torda, a wedge-shaped building by Gerard da Cunha, explains Indo-Portuguese domestic architecture. The Museum of Christian Art in Old Goa is small and excellent.
Goa with kids, realistically
South Goa is the answer with young children, since Palolem and Agonda have gentler surf and shacks used to families. Beaches have no lifeguards outside marked Drishti patrol zones, and the June-to-September sea is genuinely dangerous. Scooters are the local transport but illegal for anyone unlicensed. Older children take to the Sahakari spice plantation tours and the Mandovi sunset cruises with folk dancing.
When the weather turns in Goa
Monsoon runs June to September and does not pass in an hour: it rains for days, shacks are dismantled by law, and the sea is formally closed. That is also when Goa is greenest and cheapest. Old Goa's churches, the Museum of Goa, Fontainhas galleries and the Big Foot museum in Loutolim stay dry. Many north-coast restaurants shut entirely, while Panjim trades year-round.
