Do not buy sticky rice from vendors who intercept you at the alms ceremony, since it is often stale and the practice is precisely what residents object to. Kip is the only workable currency for small purchases and ATMs cap withdrawals low, so arrive with cash. Cover shoulders and knees at every wat, including outer courtyards. Flights through the small airport are frequently rescheduled.
What to eat in Luang Prabang
Or lam, a bitter herb-and-buffalo stew thickened with sakhan pepperwood, is the Luang Prabang dish and rarely appears elsewhere. Khai paen, Mekong river weed pressed into sheets, fried and eaten with jaew bong chilli paste, is the local snack. Luang Prabang's museums, and which one to pick
The Royal Palace Museum, the last royal residence before 1975, holds the Prabang Buddha the town is named after alongside diplomatic gifts including Apollo moon rock. It opens 08:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:00, closes Tuesdays, and bans photos and bags while requiring covered legs. Luang Prabang after dark
There is barely any, by design, because this is a UNESCO town under a curfew: bars along the Nam Khan shut around 23:00 to 23:30, and Utopia on the riverbank closes at 23:00 sharp. What follows has become a small ritual, with everyone decamping by tuk-tuk to the bowling alley on the road out of town, which keeps serving well past midnight as the only late venue.
