What's actually worth your time in Luang Prabang

Tak Bat, the alms procession that moves along Sakkaline Road from about 05:30, is the town's defining sight and costs nothing; watch silently from across the street rather than joining. Wat Xieng Thong, with its sweeping low roofline and tree-of-life mosaic, deserves its ticket. Mount Phousi's stair climb delivers the sunset view everyone queues for. Kuang Si Falls, 30 km south at 60,000 kip, is the day trip worth making.

What to eat in Luang Prabang

Or lam, a bitter herb-and-buffalo stew thickened with sakhan pepperwood, is the Luang Prabang dish and rarely appears elsewhere. Khai paen, Mekong river weed pressed into sheets, fried and eaten with jaew bong chilli paste, is the local snack. The khao soi served here is a tomato-pork noodle soup with nothing in common with Thailand's version. The night market's vegetarian buffet alley is cheap and generous.

Luang Prabang's museums, and which one to pick

The Royal Palace Museum, the last royal residence before 1975, holds the Prabang Buddha the town is named after alongside diplomatic gifts including Apollo moon rock. It opens 08:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:00, closes Tuesdays, and bans photos and bags while requiring covered legs. TAEC, the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, explains Hmong, Akha and Tai Dam textiles better than anywhere else in Laos.

Luang Prabang after dark

There is barely any, by design, because this is a UNESCO town under a curfew: bars along the Nam Khan shut around 23:00 to 23:30, and Utopia on the riverbank closes at 23:00 sharp. What follows has become a small ritual, with everyone decamping by tuk-tuk to the bowling alley on the road out of town, which keeps serving well past midnight as the only late venue.

Luang Prabang with kids, realistically

The compact peninsula is walkable and largely traffic-calmed, making this one of the easier Southeast Asian towns with young children. Kuang Si offers shallow turquoise pools for wading and a rescued sun bear enclosure on the walk up. The dawn alms ceremony demands sustained silence, which suits older children only. Roads off the main strip are unpaved, so strollers struggle.
