What things cost in Venice
A single vaporetto ride is famously steep at around 9.50 euro, so the 24, 48 or 72-hour travelcards pay for themselves on day one. The traghetto crossing is about two euro. Individual cicchetti run one and a half to three euro and an ombra of wine under three. Official gondola rates are 90 euro for thirty minutes and 110 after seven in the evening, for up to five people.
What first-timers get wrong in Venice
In 2026 the day-tripper access fee applies on sixty dates between 3 April and 26 July, from 8.30 to 16.00: five euro if booked more than four days ahead, ten if later. Overnight guests are exempt but still need a free QR registration. Coffee taken seated in Piazza San Marco costs several times the counter price, with an orchestra surcharge on top.
What to eat in Venice
Cicchetti are the format: small plates eaten standing at a bacaro with an ombra, a short glass of wine. Baccala mantecato whipped onto polenta and sarde in saor, sardines soured with onion and raisins, are the two classics. Moeche, soft-shell crabs, appear only in spring and autumn. The Fondamenta della Misericordia strip in Cannaregio is where locals crawl; Rialto's fish market shuts by early afternoon and all Sunday and Monday.

The Gallerie dell'Accademia traces Venetian painting through Bellini, Carpaccio's cycles and Giorgione's Tempest. Venice after dark
There is essentially no club scene, and that is the point. The evening is a bacaro crawl finished by midnight, with Campo Santa Margherita holding the student drinking and the Erbaria near Rialto the warm-weather overflow. Once the day-trippers board their trains around six, the calli empty out and the city becomes properly quiet, which is the best hour to walk it.
