What's actually worth your time in Venice

St Mark's Basilica repays a slow look upward at 8,000 square metres of gold mosaic, and the Pala d'Oro behind the altar is a separate small charge. The Doge's Palace and its Bridge of Sighs are the substantial ticket. Rialto Bridge is a photograph. The cheapest gondola experience is the traghetto, a standing ferry crossing of the Grand Canal for about two euro.

Venice's museums, and which one to pick

The Gallerie dell'Accademia traces Venetian painting through Bellini, Carpaccio's cycles and Giorgione's Tempest. Peggy Guggenheim's collection occupies the one-storey palazzo she lived in on the Grand Canal and closes Tuesdays. Ca' Rezzonico reconstructs eighteenth-century domestic Venice with Tiepolo ceilings. Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi handle contemporary work. The Biennale takes over the Giardini and Arsenale in alternating years.

Venice after dark

There is essentially no club scene, and that is the point. The evening is a bacaro crawl finished by midnight, with Campo Santa Margherita holding the student drinking and the Erbaria near Rialto the warm-weather overflow. Once the day-trippers board their trains around six, the calli empty out and the city becomes properly quiet, which is the best hour to walk it.

What to eat in Venice

Cicchetti are the format: small plates eaten standing at a bacaro with an ombra, a short glass of wine. Baccala mantecato whipped onto polenta and sarde in saor, sardines soured with onion and raisins, are the two classics. Moeche, soft-shell crabs, appear only in spring and autumn. The Fondamenta della Misericordia strip in Cannaregio is where locals crawl; Rialto's fish market shuts by early afternoon and all Sunday and Monday.

Venice with kids, realistically

The vaporetto is the ride and under-sixes travel free, so a slow line 1 down the Grand Canal doubles as sightseeing. Murano glassblowing demonstrations and the squero boatyards hold attention. There are no cars anywhere. Against that, more than four hundred stepped bridges make a stroller punishing, so use a carrier, and acqua alta season brings raised duckboard walkways through the low squares.

When to go to Venice

The month to avoid is December — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 9 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
