What first-timers get wrong in Venice

In 2026 the day-tripper access fee applies on sixty dates between 3 April and 26 July, from 8.30 to 16.00: five euro if booked more than four days ahead, ten if later. What's actually worth your time in Venice

Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi handle contemporary work. The Biennale takes over the Giardini and Arsenale in alternating years.

Venice with kids, realistically

The vaporetto is the ride and under-sixes travel free, so a slow line 1 down the Grand Canal doubles as sightseeing. Murano glassblowing demonstrations and the squero boatyards hold attention. There are no cars anywhere. Against that, more than four hundred stepped bridges make a stroller punishing, so use a carrier, and acqua alta season brings raised duckboard walkways through the low squares.

When the weather turns in Venice

Rain in autumn and winter often arrives with acqua alta, announced by sirens whose tone signals the expected height, so buy cheap boots rather than fight it. The Doge's Palace and the Accademia are each multi-hour indoor visits. Libreria Acqua Alta keeps its stock in bathtubs and a gondola for exactly this reason. Fondaco dei Tedeschi's rooftop slot is free but must be reserved.

When to go to Venice

The month to avoid is December — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 9 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
