Give the first full day to nothing at all, because altitude hits children as hard as adults. Sacsayhuaman is a vast open field to run across once acclimatised. San Pedro market rewards curiosity. Streets are steep, cobbled and frequently stepped, so a carrier is the only workable option. The train to Aguas Calientes is comfortable at any age; the Inca Trail is not.

What's actually worth your time in Cusco

Qorikancha makes the argument in a single building: Inca stonework precise enough to survive earthquakes, with a Dominican convent built directly on top of it. Sacsayhuaman's zigzag walls sit above the city and require the Boleto Turistico. The Twelve-Angled Stone is one stone with a permanent queue in front of it. Rainbow Mountain is heavily marketed and stands at 5,200 metres, so schedule it late, never early.

When the weather turns in Cusco

The wet season runs roughly November to March with heavy afternoon rain, and the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Indoors you have the Museo de Arte Precolombino, the textile centre, and the cathedral's colonial canvases including a Last Supper with a guinea pig laid out on the table. Sacred Valley roads occasionally wash out, so keep the itinerary loose.

What things cost in Cusco

The full Boleto Turistico costs roughly S/130 and covers sixteen sites over ten days, while the partial circuits run about S/70 for a couple of days. Machu Picchu entry for a foreign adult is around S/152 before the train, which typically costs more than the ruins themselves. A market almuerzo is S/12 to S/20; an alpaca steak in San Blas runs S/45 to S/70.

Cusco's museums, and which one to pick

The Museo de Arte Precolombino on Plaza Nazarenas is the best-presented collection in the city, treating a few hundred pieces as objects rather than artefacts. The Centro de Textiles Tradicionales keeps weavers working backstrap looms in the front room and explains the natural dyes. Museo Inka holds trepanned skulls and drinking keros. The Boleto Turistico bundles in several municipal museums you may not particularly want.

When to go to Cusco

The month to avoid is March — around 16°C (61°F) with roughly 26 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, March the month most people skip.
