What's actually worth your time in Cebu

Cebu City's core is three things inside one block: Magellan's Cross in its painted kiosk, the Basilica del Santo Nino holding the 1521 image that survived the burning of the settlement, and Fort San Pedro, a small triangular bastion fort. Temple of Leah is a photo stop and nothing else. What people actually come for, Kawasan canyoneering and Moalboal's sardine run, lies three hours south.

What to eat in Cebu

Lechon is the reason to eat here, and Cebuano lechon is stuffed with lemongrass and aromatics rather than rescued by liver sauce. Rico's, CnT and Zubuchon are the standing arguments. Larsian sa Fuente grills pork and chicken skewers over charcoal into the small hours, eaten with hanging rice. Sutukil on Mactan means one fish purchase served grilled, stewed and raw.

Cebu's museums, and which one to pick

Museo Sugbo occupies the old Carcel de Cebu, the Spanish provincial jail, and covers the colonial and wartime periods across separate galleries. Casa Gorordo is a restored nineteenth-century bahay na bato showing how a Cebuano merchant family lived. The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House nearby is older and still privately owned. Most run reduced Sunday hours or close, so check before crossing the traffic.

Cebu after dark

Cebu's evening splits between Mango Avenue's older, rougher bar strip and the newer clusters at IT Park and Ayala Center. Sugbo Mercado, the night food market at IT Park, runs Thursday to Sunday and is where most people start. Mactan's beach resorts operate a separate scene of their own. Traffic is the constraint: five kilometres across the city can take an hour after dark.

Cebu with kids, realistically

Mactan is where families base themselves, because the resorts hold the only reliable swimming and Cebu City has no beach at all. Island hopping to Hilutungan and Nalusuan works from about age six with life jackets. Pavements in the old city are broken or occupied, so strollers struggle. The Oslob whale shark operation feeds wild animals to keep them there, which older children deserve explained.

When to go to Cebu

The month to avoid is May — around 31°C (88°F) with roughly 25 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, May the month most people skip.
