What first-timers get wrong in Cebu

Jeepney fares are passed hand to hand down the row, and you call para to stop; modern air-conditioned units take a Beep card instead. Grab exists and surges hard in rain. Domestic flights and the ferries to Bohol and Negros leave from different piers, and the pier terminal fee is collected separately in cash. Allow far more time for city traffic than any map suggests.

What's actually worth your time in Cebu

Cebu City's core is three things inside one block: Magellan's Cross in its painted kiosk, the Basilica del Santo Nino holding the 1521 image that survived the burning of the settlement, and Fort San Pedro, a small triangular bastion fort. Temple of Leah is a photo stop and nothing else. What people actually come for, Kawasan canyoneering and Moalboal's sardine run, lies three hours south.

Cebu's museums, and which one to pick

Museo Sugbo occupies the old Carcel de Cebu, the Spanish provincial jail, and covers the colonial and wartime periods across separate galleries. Casa Gorordo is a restored nineteenth-century bahay na bato showing how a Cebuano merchant family lived. The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House nearby is older and still privately owned. Most run reduced Sunday hours or close, so check before crossing the traffic.

Cebu with kids, realistically

Mactan is where families base themselves, because the resorts hold the only reliable swimming and Cebu City has no beach at all. Island hopping to Hilutungan and Nalusuan works from about age six with life jackets. Pavements in the old city are broken or occupied, so strollers struggle. The Oslob whale shark operation feeds wild animals to keep them there, which older children deserve explained.

When the weather turns in Cebu

The rainy months run roughly June to November and typhoons make landfall across this part of the Visayas; Odette in December 2021 stripped much of the city's tree cover. Ayala Center and SM Seaside carry an indoor afternoon with cinemas. Museo Sugbo and Casa Gorordo are both roofed. Kawasan canyoneering is suspended outright when the river runs high, and that call is not negotiable.

When to go to Cebu

The month to avoid is May — around 31°C (88°F) with roughly 25 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, May the month most people skip.
