What's actually worth your time in Munich

The Glockenspiel performs at 11 and noon, plus five in summer, and it is precisely ten minutes of clockwork, so treat it as a photo stop. The genuinely unusual free sight is the Eisbach standing wave at the Prinzregentenstrasse bridge, surfed year-round in wetsuits. The Englischer Garten is bigger than Central Park. Nymphenburg's canal frontage and the Residenz Antiquarium reward tickets more than the Hofbrauhaus does.

What to eat in Munich

Those close Mondays; the Deutsches Museum does not.

Munich after dark

Munich's evening is a beer garden or a hall, not a club district. Hofbrauhaus is largely tourist theatre; Augustiner-Keller's chestnut yard and the enormous Hirschgarten are where the city actually drinks. Hellabrunn is arranged as a geo-zoo by continent. The Eisbach surfers cost nothing and hold children longer than most exhibits. Munich is flat, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn have lifts, and under-sixes travel free on MVV services.
