What's actually worth your time in Munich

The Glockenspiel performs at 11 and noon, plus five in summer, and it is precisely ten minutes of clockwork, so treat it as a photo stop. Munich after dark

The Deutsches Museum's Kinderreich is built for under-sixes and is included with entry, and a family ticket covers two adults with their children for 33 euro. Hellabrunn is arranged as a geo-zoo by continent. The Eisbach surfers cost nothing and hold children longer than most exhibits. Munich is flat, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn have lifts, and under-sixes travel free on MVV services.

When the weather turns in Munich

The Deutsches Museum genuinely absorbs an entire wet day, and the Pinakotheken cluster in Maxvorstadt lets you cross between three galleries in minutes. BMW Welt charges nothing to walk through. The Residenz strings together well over a hundred rooms indoors. Munich's autumn rain arrives with cold Alpine air, so the covered Viktualienmarkt stalls and Schwabing cafes matter more than in milder cities.
