What's actually worth your time in Nadi
Nadi is a gateway rather than a destination, and pretending otherwise ruins itineraries: the town is a duty-free strip and the nearest beach, Wailoaloa, is grey and shallow. What surrounds it is worth the day. Sri Siva Subramaniya at the end of Main Street is the southern hemisphere's largest Hindu temple, painted in Dravidian colours, and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant's orchid house was planted by Raymond Burr.
What to eat in Nadi
Fijian eating is as Indo-Fijian as it is Melanesian, and Nadi is where that shows. Roti parcels and goat curry on Main Street cost single-digit dollars. Kokoda, walu cured in lime and finished with coconut cream, is the dish to order and runs around 20 Fijian dollars at Nadina. A lovo is a pit oven of meat and dalo buried on hot stones, usually a resort buffet night.
Nadi's museums, and which one to pick
Nadi has essentially no museums and a day spent hunting one is wasted. The nearest real collection is the Fiji Museum in Suva's Thurston Gardens, four hours away by road, holding the rudder of HMS Bounty and the ocean-going drua canoes. Locally the substitute is craft rather than curation: the Nadi Handicraft Market sells masi bark cloth and carved tanoa kava bowls, and the temple interprets its own iconography.
Nadi after dark
There genuinely is not much of one. Denarau's resort bars and the Port Denarau boardwalk absorb most evenings, while Ed's Bar and the Bounty are the town's late options. The real article is a kava circle, the bilo passed round a tanoa with one clap before and three after. Licensing closes most places well before two, and Denarau taxis stop hovering not long after.
Nadi with kids, realistically
The islands, not Nadi itself, are the family draw, and day boats from Port Denarau reach South Sea Island or Malamala in under an hour. Denarau's Big Bula inflatable waterpark is the dependable under-ten fallback. Roads here have no pavements worth pushing a pram along and taxis cost little, so walking is rarely the plan. Sunburn arrives fast at seventeen degrees south.
