Santorini after dark
This is a dinner island rather than a club island. Fira has the only concentrated strip, where a handful of bars run to about four in high summer, while Oia empties completely once the sunset crowd disperses and its restaurants stop seating early. From November to March a large share of the caldera villages simply shut, staff and owners included, and the rim goes dark.
What to eat in Santorini
The island's volcanic soil produces small, intense dry-farmed tomatoes that become tomatokeftedes fritters, plus PDO fava, a yellow split-pea puree eaten warm with onion and capers, and a white aubergine unique to the island. Assyrtiko vines are trained into basket-shaped kouloura coils flat to the ground against the wind; Santo Wines and Venetsanos both pour with a caldera view. What's actually worth your time in Santorini
The island's real attraction is free: the caldera rim path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, roughly ten kilometres and three to four hours along the cliff edge. Oia's sunset is a genuine crush of bodies; Imerovigli and the Skaros Rock scramble deliver the same view without it. Red Beach is closed off in parts by rockfall. The donkey ride up the old port steps is the thing to refuse.
Santorini's museums, and which one to pick
Akrotiri, 20 euro, is a Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash beneath a modern roof, with multi-storey walls, drainage and streets intact and, notably, no human remains found. Its frescoes were moved to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, where the boxing boys and blue monkeys hang. Ancient Thera, 10 euro, sits on the Mesa Vouno ridge and closes Wednesdays.
