What first-timers get wrong in Santorini
Every KTEL bus routes through Fira, so there is no direct Oia to Perissa service and you will change. From 2026 a cruise passenger cap of 8,000 a day plus a 20 euro levy limits how many ships call. Quad and ATV rentals require a proper licence and account for a disproportionate share of island accidents. Oia dinner reservations need booking days out.
Santorini after dark
This is a dinner island rather than a club island. Fira has the only concentrated strip, where a handful of bars run to about four in high summer, while Oia empties completely once the sunset crowd disperses and its restaurants stop seating early. From November to March a large share of the caldera villages simply shut, staff and owners included, and the rim goes dark.
What things cost in Santorini
Most KTEL routes cost 2.20 euro, including Fira to Oia; Fira to Athinios port is 2.70 and Vlychada 2.80. Akrotiri is 20 euro and Ancient Thera 10. Caldera catamaran cruises start near 69 euro and rise with food and open bar. The August price of a caldera-view room is a multiple of the May price for the identical room.
Santorini with kids, realistically
The caldera villages are built as stairs and terraces with unfenced drops beside walkways, which makes them poor territory for toddlers however photogenic they are. Perissa and Kamari on the flat eastern side suit families far better, though the black volcanic sand becomes too hot to stand on by midday. Volcano boat trips involve an exposed uphill scramble over sharp lava with no shade.
When the weather turns in Santorini
Rain is genuinely rare and confined to roughly November through February, which is also when the fewest places are open. Akrotiri is entirely roofed and works in any weather. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera is a short indoor visit, and the winery tasting rooms at Santo Wines and Venetsanos are covered. Before driving up in winter, check what is actually trading, because assumptions fail here.
