What's actually worth your time in Santorini

The island's real attraction is free: the caldera rim path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, roughly ten kilometres and three to four hours along the cliff edge. Oia's sunset is a genuine crush of bodies; Imerovigli and the Skaros Rock scramble deliver the same view without it. Red Beach is closed off in parts by rockfall. The donkey ride up the old port steps is the thing to refuse.

What to eat in Santorini

The island's volcanic soil produces small, intense dry-farmed tomatoes that become tomatokeftedes fritters, plus PDO fava, a yellow split-pea puree eaten warm with onion and capers, and a white aubergine unique to the island. Assyrtiko vines are trained into basket-shaped kouloura coils flat to the ground against the wind; Santo Wines and Venetsanos both pour with a caldera view. What things cost in Santorini

Most KTEL routes cost 2.20 euro, including Fira to Oia; Fira to Athinios port is 2.70 and Vlychada 2.80. Akrotiri is 20 euro and Ancient Thera 10. Caldera catamaran cruises start near 69 euro and rise with food and open bar. The August price of a caldera-view room is a multiple of the May price for the identical room.

What first-timers get wrong in Santorini

Every KTEL bus routes through Fira, so there is no direct Oia to Perissa service and you will change. From 2026 a cruise passenger cap of 8,000 a day plus a 20 euro levy limits how many ships call. Quad and ATV rentals require a proper licence and account for a disproportionate share of island accidents. Oia dinner reservations need booking days out.

Santorini's museums, and which one to pick

Akrotiri, 20 euro, is a Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash beneath a modern roof, with multi-storey walls, drainage and streets intact and, notably, no human remains found. Its frescoes were moved to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, where the boxing boys and blue monkeys hang. Ancient Thera, 10 euro, sits on the Mesa Vouno ridge and closes Wednesdays.

When to go to Santorini

The month to avoid is January — around 15°C (59°F) with roughly 8 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
