Split on a Budget: What €70, €150 and €330 a Day Actually Get You
A concrete, three-tier look at daily costs in Split — lodging, food, getting around and the boat days — so you can plan a realistic euro budget instead of guessing.
How Split costs actually break down
Split is mid-priced for the Mediterranean, but the season is a bigger lever here than the city is: the same room can cost two to three times more in late July than in October. After lodging, the item that decides your daily number is whether you spend the day on a boat. The city itself is cheap to exist in — the palace is free to walk through, Marjan is a public park, the beaches cost nothing, and a bus ticket is small change. The tiers below are per person per day, excluding flights.
≈ €70 / day — lean
A hostel bed or a shared budget apartment out toward Lučac or Žnjan, bakery breakfasts and market lunches, one cheap sit-down plate, and days built around the free city: the palace streets, Marjan, Bačvice, the markets. Very comfortable outside July and August.
- Sleep: hostel bed or a shared budget apartment — roughly €25–45.
- Food: bakery, market and one casual plate — roughly €25–40.
- Getting around + sights: walking, the odd bus ticket, one small entry — roughly €5–15.
≈ €150 / day — comfortable
A mid-range hotel room or a central apartment split two ways, a proper konoba dinner most nights, the cathedral-and-substructures tickets, and one ferry day out to Brač or Hvar spread across the trip. This is the tier most couples actually travel at here.
- Sleep: mid-range hotel room or central apartment, split two ways — roughly €65–120.
- Food: one konoba dinner plus casual eating — roughly €45–80.
- Transport, tickets and a ferry day amortised — roughly €25–60.
≈ €330+ / day — generous
A boutique hotel inside the walls or a sea-view apartment on Meje, restaurant meals without reading the right-hand column, private airport transfers, and the premium version of the water — a skippered speedboat to the Blue Cave and Vis rather than a shared group departure. At this tier the wind is the only thing that limits you.
- Sleep: boutique palace hotel or premium sea-view apartment, per person — roughly €150–275.
- Food: restaurant meals and wine — roughly €100–190.
- Private transfers and skippered or premium boat days — roughly €80–200.
The boat is the line item that breaks budgets
Everything else in Split is predictable; the sea is not. A foot-passenger crossing to Brač or Hvar is small money, but a full-day Blue Cave speedboat trip is one of the largest single charges of a short trip, and a private charter is several times that again. Decide early how many sea days you want and at what level — one shared group excursion plus one cheap public ferry day is usually the best value combination — because retrofitting a boat day onto a full budget is where plans come apart.
Where the free value is
Walking the palace at 7am before anyone else is up, the Riva at sunset, the whole of Marjan including the Vidilica view and the Telegrin ridge, Bačvice and the Kašjuni pebbles, the two markets, and the klapa singing that starts up in the palace Vestibule most summer evenings — none of it costs anything. Spend where it counts: a boat day, one good fish dinner, and a room close enough to the walls that the free part is on your doorstep.
