Where to stay in Split
Split’s lodging market is apartments first and hotels second — private, family-run flats vastly outnumber hotel rooms, and inside the palace they are often the only way to sleep in a Roman monument. So the real question is a pair: how close to the walls, and what kind of building. Everything worth walking to sits inside a 25-minute radius, which means you are choosing between atmosphere and sleep, not between convenient and inconvenient.

Vibe: Extraordinary, dense, awake late
Trade-off: No vehicle can reach your door, luggage crosses polished stone, many flats sit up three or four flights with no lift, and the bar streets run past 2am in summer.

Hotel or apartment?

- You’d rather pay for a sea-view room than manage a lockbox code down an unlit stone lane after a late flight.

- You’re a family or a group — Split’s supply is overwhelmingly apartments, and that’s where the space and the value are.
- You want a kitchen for what you carry back from the green market and the fish market.
- You’re staying a week and using Split as an island base, so laundry and a fridge matter more than a restaurant downstairs.
