How Zurich costs actually break down

Zurich is expensive, but it is expensive in a lopsided way: lodging and restaurant dinners carry almost all the pain, while transit is cheap (CHF 9.40 for a 24-hour city pass), the lake, the Old Town and the fountains are free, and the museum bill is capped by the Zürich Card if you want it to be. The tiers below are per person per day, excluding flights, and assume the lunch-menu and supermarket habits locals actually use.

This is the tier most couples actually travel Zurich at, and it does not feel like scrimping.

A boutique Altstadt hotel or a lakefront five-star, restaurant meals without reading the right-hand column, first-class trains, and premium experiences — a private lake cruise, a guided Lucerne-and-Pilatus day, headline seats at the Opera House. Zurich’s top end is world-class and prices accordingly; at this tier the constraint is your calendar.

Where the free value is

The Old Town on both banks, the Lindenhof terrace, the lake promenade from Bürkliplatz to Zürichhorn, swimming in a lake clean enough to drink from (the fountains literally are drinkable), and the autumn spectacle of Uetliberg floating above the fog all cost nothing or nearly nothing. Spend where Zurich is genuinely special — one great museum, one boat, one proper Swiss dinner — and let the water and the walking be free.
