Where to stay in Zurich
Zurich’s lodging decision is not about distance — the tram network makes every district a short ride from every other — but about price and atmosphere. The Altstadt and the lake command the highest rates in an already expensive city; Zürich West and the Langstrasse quarter trade polish for energy and somewhat gentler prices; Oerlikon in the north is the honest budget play, five minutes from the Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn. Then decide hotel vs apartment — knowing that hotels dominate the market here and rental supply is thinner than in most cities this size.

Hotel or apartment?
Choose a hotel when…
- You’re staying 1–4 nights — Zurich’s hotel market is deep and rental supply is thin, so hotels usually win on both choice and price for short stays.
- You want the front desk to handle the early train to the mountains or the airport run.
- You’re traveling solo or as a couple and eating out (or lunching out, cooking dinner-lite) anyway.
Choose an apartment when…
- You’re a family or group for whom two or three hotel rooms at Zurich rates makes an apartment the cheaper option.
- You plan to blunt Switzerland’s food prices by cooking — supermarkets are excellent and a kitchen pays for itself here faster than almost anywhere.
- You’re staying a week or more; serviced apartments (a strong sector in Zurich) bridge the gap with laundry and weekly rates.
