Things to do in Zurich worth pre-booking
A lot of the best of Zurich is free — the Old Town lanes, the lake promenade, the public drinking fountains on almost every square — but a few things genuinely reward booking ahead: the Lindt chocolate museum’s timed slots, big Kunsthaus exhibitions, and seats on the popular day-trip trains. Old Town & the two Münsters
Fraumünster’s Chagall stained-glass windows (a small entry fee, audio guide included) and the climb up Grossmünster’s Karlsturm tower for the lake-and-Alps view are the historic core’s two essentials; a guided walk stitches the guild-house story together.
Both churches are working parishes — visiting hours shorten around services, especially Sunday mornings.
Lake Zurich cruises & the badi culture
ZSG boats leave from Bürkliplatz — a short round trip covers the near lake basin, and in summer the riverside and lakeside badis (public baths, several of which turn into bars at night) are the city’s real social scene.
Short round cruises count as public transit — an ordinary ZVV zone ticket or the Zürich Card covers them.
Chocolate: Lindt Home of Chocolate & tastings
The Lindt museum in Kilchberg — CHF 17 for adults, with its giant chocolate fountain in the atrium — is Zurich’s most-booked ticket, and you can reach it by S-Bahn or, better, by boat down the lake. Guided chocolate and food tastings in town cover the Sprüngli-and-truffles side.
Open daily 10:00–19:00 with last museum entry at 17:30, and Lindt asks you to book online in advance — same-day tickets are not guaranteed.
Museums: Kunsthaus, Landesmuseum & FIFA
The Kunsthaus (Giacometti, Munch and the Chipperfield extension) and the Swiss National Museum beside the station are the two heavyweights; the FIFA Museum adds the football pilgrimage. All three are among the many museums the Zürich Card admits you to free, which is where the card starts paying for itself.
The Kunsthaus is closed Mondays (Thursdays it runs late, to 20:00) and most other majors follow the same Monday rule — put the lake or the mountain on Monday instead.
Uetliberg — the house mountain
The S10 train climbs from the Hauptbahnhof to the top of Uetliberg in about 20 minutes for the classic panorama over city, lake and Alps; the ridge path to Felsenegg (with a cable car down) makes an easy two-hour walk. In autumn and winter the summit often floats above the fog that blankets the city.
Day trips: Rhine Falls, Lucerne & the mountains
The Rhine Falls — Europe’s most powerful waterfall — is under an hour away by train; Lucerne, with boat-and-cogwheel add-ons up Rigi or Pilatus, is about 50 minutes. Jungfraujoch and Titlis are heavily marketed from Zurich but are a very long haul for one day.
For the big-mountain excursions, compare a guided coach tour against doing the same trains yourself before paying the markup.

Booking tips (so you don’t overpay)
- Book the Lindt Home of Chocolate slot before you fly — it is open daily, but Lindt explicitly asks for advance online booking and does not guarantee same-day tickets.
- Do the Zürich Card math (CHF 29 for 24h, CHF 56 for 72h; CHF 19/37 for children 6–15): it covers unlimited transit including the airport transfer and the Uetliberg trip, short lake and Limmat cruises, and free entry to many museums. It wins on a museum-heavy day; a plain CHF 9.40 ZVV 24-hour ticket wins if you are mostly walking.
- Museums close Mondays and shops close Sundays — sequence museum days, shopping and the mountain around that rhythm, not around the weather alone.
- Prefer free cancellation on day-trip bookings and re-check prices close to the date; outside the Street Parade and Film Festival windows, Zurich tours rarely sell out far ahead.
