Haleakala's summit sits at 10,023 feet and requires a one-dollar reservation for any vehicle entering between 3am and 7am, released sixty days out on recreation.gov. The Hana Highway's fifty-nine one-lane bridges are the experience; the town at the end is not. Waianapanapa's black sand demands a separate timed booking, and Iao Valley wants one too. Lahaina is rebuilding after the 2023 fire, so visit respectfully or not at all.
What to eat in Maui
Poke bought by the pound from Foodland or Tamura's beats almost any restaurant version. Plate lunch means two scoops of rice and macaroni salad, no negotiation. Komoda Store and Bakery in Makawao sells cream puffs until they run out, usually before noon, and shuts Wednesdays and Sundays. Mama's Fish House in Kuau books months ahead. Banana bread from the Keanae stands is a Hana Highway ritual.
When the weather turns in Maui
Weather here is geographic rather than seasonal: the windward Hana side rains most days while Kihei and Wailea stay dry, so the first move is to drive south. If you are stuck upcountry, Maui Ocean Center, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului, the Alii Kula Lavender farm and MauiWine at Ulupalakua all work wet. Whalers Village shopping is the honest fallback.
Maui after dark
There is barely any, and that is the honest answer. The crowd gathers instead at Puu Kekaa in Kaanapali for the sunset cliff-diving ceremony, or on a luau lawn. Charley's in Paia and the Lahaina music rooms cover live bands. Most kitchens stop serving around nine. The genuine evening event is stargazing: drive back up Haleakala after dark, where no sunrise permit applies.
Maui with kids, realistically
Humpbacks fill the Auau Channel from December to April and are visible from the Papawai lookout without a boat. Kapalua Bay and Ulua Beach stay calm enough for small swimmers. Maui Ocean Center suits any age in ninety minutes. There is no useful public transport, so a rental car with your own car seats is not optional. The Hana road induces motion sickness in most children.
