What first-timers get wrong in Hiroshima
Fares are paid when leaving the tram, not boarding it, and the city flat rate is 220 yen regardless of distance. With Miyajima on the plan, the 1,000-yen combined streetcar and ferry day pass beats assembling the pieces. A 100-yen island visitor levy is collected at the ferry gate. Rail pass holders should take the JR ferry rather than the Matsudai boat beside it. Nozomi trains sit outside the standard pass.
What things cost in Hiroshima
Entry fees here are unusually gentle: 200 yen for the Peace Memorial Museum, 300 for Itsukushima Shrine, 260 for Shukkeien garden. A plate at an Okonomimura counter lands between 1,000 and 1,400 yen. The Hiroden day pass is 700 yen, or 1,000 with the Miyajima ferry folded in, against 220 for a single ride. Grilled oysters on Omotesando sell by the pair for a few hundred yen in season.
What to eat in Hiroshima
Okonomiyaki is layered here rather than stirred, with a nest of yakisoba noodles pressed between crepe and mounded cabbage; Okonomimura stacks two dozen griddle counters across three floors near Nagarekawa. Oysters are the winter crop, grilled in the shell along Miyajima's Omotesando or simmered as dotenabe with miso. Hiroshima tsukemen comes cold with a fierce chilli dipping broth, unrelated to the Tokyo dish. Anago-meshi, sea eel over rice, belongs to Miyajimaguchi.
Hiroshima with kids, realistically
The Peace Memorial Museum's second half is graphic, with burned school uniforms and a child's tricycle among the photographs, and plenty of parents route under-tens through the park and the Children's Peace Monument instead. Miyajima's tame sika deer will pull a paper map straight out of a pocket. The free Children's Museum near the castle is hands-on. Streetcars swallow pushchairs easily and the Miyajima ferry loads by ramp.
When the weather turns in Hiroshima
Hondori's covered arcade runs several hundred metres from Kamiyacho toward the Peace Park, and the Shareo underground mall extends that dry route beneath the crossing. Okonomimura is indoor by definition. The Prefectural Art Museum adjoins Shukkeien, so you can study a soaked garden through glass. Mazda's factory museum, reached on the Ujina line, takes English bookings and runs whatever the sky does. Department stores near the station absorb the rest.
