What's actually worth your time in Hiroshima

Nothing is charged for the A-Bomb Dome, and the ruin is the point; the Peace Memorial Museum beside it is what people actually travel for. Hiroshima Castle's keep is a 1958 concrete replica with a modest samurai display, better circled from the moat path than entered. Over on Miyajima, read the tide table before you go: the great torii stands in water for half the day and on mudflats the rest.

Hiroshima after dark

Nagarekawa and the narrower Yagenbori lanes beside it hold most of the drinking, a dense grid of izakaya, standing bars and hostess clubs minutes from the Hondori arcade, whose shops shutter around eight. Streetcars stop before midnight on most lines, so check the last departure from Hatchobori if your hotel sits near the station. Miyajima empties completely once the final ferry leaves; the island is not an evening plan.

Hiroshima's museums, and which one to pick

Two hundred yen opens the Peace Memorial Museum, deliberately underpriced and correspondingly packed, though timed slots for the East Building ease the queue. For painting, the privately funded Hiroshima Museum of Art keeps Van Gogh's Daubigny's Garden alongside Monet and Renoir, while the Prefectural Art Museum next to Shukkeien garden owns Dali's Dream of Venus. Both shut on Mondays. The contemporary art museum sits up in Hijiyama Park with the manga library.

Hiroshima with kids, realistically

The Peace Memorial Museum's second half is graphic, with burned school uniforms and a child's tricycle among the photographs, and plenty of parents route under-tens through the park and the Children's Peace Monument instead. Miyajima's tame sika deer will pull a paper map straight out of a pocket. The free Children's Museum near the castle is hands-on. Streetcars swallow pushchairs easily and the Miyajima ferry loads by ramp.

When the weather turns in Hiroshima

Hondori's covered arcade runs several hundred metres from Kamiyacho toward the Peace Park, and the Shareo underground mall extends that dry route beneath the crossing. Okonomimura is indoor by definition. The Prefectural Art Museum adjoins Shukkeien, so you can study a soaked garden through glass. Mazda's factory museum, reached on the Ujina line, takes English bookings and runs whatever the sky does. Department stores near the station absorb the rest.

When to go to Hiroshima

The month to avoid is January — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 7 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
