What first-timers get wrong in Honolulu

Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay both require advance online reservations from non-residents and both sell out; Hanauma also closes Mondays and Tuesdays. Sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate cannot legally be sold in Hawaii, so buy reef-safe or bring it. Pearl Harbor bans bags of any size at the memorial and charges for lockers. Waikiki hotel parking often runs forty dollars a night on top of a resort fee.

What things cost in Honolulu

TheBus charges $2.75 a ride with a HOLO card and caps at $7.50 a day, which beats parking anywhere near Waikiki. Diamond Head is five dollars per person plus ten for the car; Hanauma Bay is twenty-five for non-residents. Pearl Harbor is free with seven-dollar parking. A plate lunch runs twelve to sixteen dollars and feeds most people twice.

What to eat in Honolulu

Plate lunch is the local grammar: two scoops of rice, macaroni salad and a protein, whether kalua pig or chicken katsu, at Rainbow Drive-In or Zippy's. Poke is bought by weight from supermarket counters, not restaurants, and Foodland's is the local answer. Leonard's on Kapahulu has fried malasadas since 1952. Garlic shrimp trucks cluster at Kahuku on the north shore.

Honolulu with kids, realistically

Kuhio Beach in Waikiki has a concrete breakwater that makes a calm walled pool, which is the only genuinely toddler-safe swimming on that stretch. The Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium sit together at the Kapahulu end. Diamond Head's climb is eight-tenths of a mile through tunnels and stairways, hot, and impossible with a pushchair, so it suits about seven upwards.

When the weather turns in Honolulu

Rain here is geographic rather than daily: Waikiki sits leeward and often stays dry while Manoa Valley two miles inland is soaked, so a shower is usually a reason to change neighbourhood rather than plans. If it settles in, Bishop Museum and the Honolulu Museum of Art are half-days, and the Pearl Harbor aviation hangars on Ford Island are covered.

When to go to Honolulu

The month to avoid is March — around 25°C (77°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, March the month most people skip.
