What first-timers get wrong in Perth
Perth runs two hours behind Sydney for much of the year and does not observe daylight saving, which quietly wrecks flight and phone-call planning. The Free Transit Zone covers the CBD, so travel inside it costs nothing — but tap off, or you get charged anyway. Rottnest ferries add an island admission fee on top of the fare. Perth after dark
Northbridge holds nearly all of it, a grid north of the railway line where James and Lake Streets stack small bars — Western Australia only licensed small bars in 2007, and the format promptly took over. Fremantle's South Terrace cappuccino strip runs earlier and more casual. Elizabeth Quay is the expensive version. This is the most isolated major city on earth, and midweek nights end accordingly early.
