What's actually worth your time in Perth
Kings Park covers about four hundred hectares above the Swan, larger than Central Park, and its Federation Walkway runs a glass-and-steel bridge through eucalypt canopy for nothing. Rottnest Island is the day trip: no private cars, quokkas that walk up to you, ferries from Fremantle or Elizabeth Quay. Fremantle Prison is Western Australia's only World Heritage listed building. Cottesloe is where Perth watches the sun drop into the Indian Ocean.
Perth after dark
Northbridge holds nearly all of it, a grid north of the railway line where James and Lake Streets stack small bars — Western Australia only licensed small bars in 2007, and the format promptly took over. Fremantle's South Terrace cappuccino strip runs earlier and more casual. Elizabeth Quay is the expensive version. This is the most isolated major city on earth, and midweek nights end accordingly early.
Perth's museums, and which one to pick
WA Museum Boola Bardip reopened in 2020 wrapped around the old Perth Gaol, charges nothing for general entry, and hangs a blue whale skeleton over its entrance hall. The Art Gallery of Western Australia is also free and strongest on Western Desert painting. The WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle displays the actual timbers of the Batavia, wrecked in 1629, alongside the stone portico she was carrying.
Perth with kids, realistically
Rottnest works from about age six: bikes, no cars, and quokkas that pose without being fed, which is illegal there anyway. Perth Zoo is reachable by ferry across the Swan from Elizabeth Quay. Kings Park's Rio Tinto Naturescape is a free water-and-log playground built for unstructured play. AQWA at Hillarys runs an underwater tunnel. Free CAT buses loop the CBD and Fremantle and take strollers easily.
When the weather turns in Perth
Rain in Perth is a winter matter, June through August, when cold fronts arrive off the Indian Ocean in bands. The two big free institutions, Boola Bardip and the Art Gallery of WA, sit a covered walk apart in the Perth Cultural Centre. Fremantle's Shipwrecks and Maritime museums face the harbour. Perth Mint pours a molten gold bar hourly, indoors and reliably theatrical.
