What first-timers get wrong in Da Nang
Crossing a road in this motorbike city means walking at a constant pace and letting traffic flow around you; stopping suddenly is what causes collisions. Use Grab for cars and bikes, because street taxis quote badly. Renting a motorbike without the correct licence voids travel insurance outright. My Khe flies a flag system, rip currents build from October, and lifeguards leave at five.
What's actually worth your time in Da Nang
Marble Mountains costs 40,000 VND plus 15,000 for the lift each way, and the Am Phu hell cave needs its own 20,000 VND ticket, which is the memorable part. Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge charge 950,000 VND and amount to a theme park with a famous handrail. My Khe beach is free and better than either. Dragon Bridge breathes fire Friday to Sunday at nine.
Da Nang's museums, and which one to pick
The Museum of Cham Sculpture, built by the French in 1915 beside the Han River, is the world's best collection of Cham art, with sandstone altars and Shiva lingams lifted from My Son. Entry is 60,000 VND and it opens daily from seven to five. The Da Nang Museum and Fine Arts Museum are modest by comparison. The 3D Trick Eye place is a photo studio, not a museum.
Da Nang with kids, realistically
This is the easiest Vietnamese city for small children: wide pavements, a long flat beachfront promenade, and calm surf at My Khe between March and September. Asia Park's Sun Wheel suits under-tens, while Marble Mountains' steps do not. Ba Na Hills is a full day and a great deal of cable car. Grab is cheap, but child seats are effectively unavailable, so plan accordingly.
When the weather turns in Da Nang
The rain and typhoon season lands September to December, and October and November bring serious street flooding rather than drizzle. The Cham Museum, Vincom Plaza and Lotte Mart are the dry options. Ba Na Hills is pointless in cloud since you end up inside the weather. Hoi An is thirty minutes south, where the covered market and the tailors carry on regardless.
